Permanent Makeup (PMU) Laser Removal in Norwich

Laser Tattoo Removal in Norwich for Permanent Makeup

My specialist focus is laser tattoo removal for permanent makeup, including brows, microblading, lip blush and permanent eyeliner.

Permanent makeup removal is more complicated than simply pointing a tattoo laser at the visible colour.

As both a permanent makeup practitioner and laser practitioner, I approach removal by looking at what may actually be sitting within the skin, including previous treatments, pigment depth and saturation, colour corrections, pigment brand where known and the way different colour components are likely to respond to laser.

Sometimes the most important part of PMU removal happens before I switch the laser on.

Why PMU Laser Removal Is Different

A brown eyebrow is not necessarily made from one brown pigment.

Professional PMU shades can contain mixtures of different colourants, including organic pigments and inorganic pigments such as iron oxides and titanium dioxide.

Individual colourants may be identified by their Colour Index or CI numbers, and knowing the original pigment brand and shade can sometimes give me useful information about what may be present in the skin.

This becomes particularly important when someone has had treatment after treatment over several years.

A brow may contain one pigment from the original treatment, another from later colour boosts, corrective colour over the top and perhaps completely different pigment brands used by different practitioners.

When laser removes or reduces one component, another colour can become visible underneath. This is why an apparently grey or brown brow can reveal red, orange or yellow, and occasionally other colours, as treatment progresses.

It has not necessarily been "turned orange" by the laser. We may simply have uncovered a colour component that was previously masked by darker pigment.

Some pale, pink, peach or corrective pigments containing compounds such as iron oxides or titanium dioxide can also undergo paradoxical darkening after laser exposure. This is one reason cosmetic tattoo removal needs pigment knowledge rather than a simple point-and-shoot approach.

If you know which pigment brand or shade was used, tell me. Old treatment records, pigment names or even photographs of the bottle can be useful.

Eyebrow Tattoo & Microblading Laser Removal Norwich

Eyebrows are my main area of PMU laser removal.

I treat unwanted powder brows, ombre brows, microblading and older semi-permanent eyebrow tattoos that have become too dark, grey, red, saturated, uneven or incorrectly positioned.

Complete removal is not always necessary.

Sometimes the aim is simply to reduce old pigment enough to give a PMU artist a cleaner canvas for a new set of brows rather than continuing to implant more pigment over increasingly saturated old work.

Because I also perform permanent makeup myself, I understand both what has gone into creating the brow and what needs to happen if the eventual goal is to redesign it.

Lip blush has its own pigment challenges because cosmetic lip shades may contain combinations of reds, pinks, oranges, yellows, whites and corrective pigments.

That means I assess the existing colour and treatment history carefully before deciding whether laser is appropriate.

Not every pigment or residual colour is equally responsive to every laser wavelength. If I believe a colour is unlikely to respond appropriately to the wavelengths available to me, I would rather tell you than repeatedly laser something for little benefit.

Lip blush can be treated for significant fading or removal, or simply to reduce unwanted pigment before the lips are redesigned.

Permanent eyeliner can also be removed with laser, including unwanted eyeliner, heavy or dated pigment and areas that need reducing before new permanent makeup is considered.

Understandably, this is the area clients are often most nervous about because the treatment is so close to the eye.

Eyeliner laser removal requires specific periocular safety protocols and appropriate ocular protection throughout treatment. I will explain exactly how your eyes are protected before we begin.

Because I also perform permanent eyeliner, I understand eyeliner placement and design as well as its removal. This is particularly useful when we are selectively reducing an unwanted tail, thickness or shape rather than simply trying to erase everything.

Specialist PMU Pigment Knowledge

I have worked across permanent makeup and aesthetics for more than 15 years and have undertaken advanced PMU laser-removal training with Fade Ink, including specialist education in pigmentology, predicting colour response and the removal of eyebrows, lips and eyeliner.

My treatment planning considers:

  • Your visible pigment colour

  • Previous PMU and colour corrections

  • Number of previous treatments

  • Pigment brand and shade where known

  • CI pigment information where available

  • Depth and saturation

  • Previous laser response

  • Colours revealed as treatment progresses

The aim is not just to fire more energy at stubborn pigment. It is to understand what the pigment is doing and adapt the removal strategy accordingly.

How Does PMU Laser Removal Work?

Keeping Treatment Comfortable

I use an Active Q-Switched Nd laser to deliver extremely short pulses of energy into suitable tattoo pigment.

Pigment particles absorb the laser energy and fragment into smaller particles, which can then be cleared gradually by the body's normal immune processes over the following weeks.

Different pigment colours respond differently to different wavelengths, so PMU removal may need to be approached in stages as colours change or previously hidden components become visible.

PMU areas can be sensitive, so comfort is considered throughout treatment.

Topical numbing can be used where appropriate and I use professional Zimmer cold-air cooling during laser treatment to reduce heat and make treatment considerably more comfortable.

The actual laser treatment of an eyebrow, lip or eyeliner area is usually relatively quick.

How Many PMU Removal Sessions Will I Need?

There is no honest fixed answer.

A lightly implanted eyebrow treated once is very different from a brow that has received repeated colour boosts and corrections over many years.

The number of treatments depends on factors including pigment composition, colour, saturation, depth, treatment history, your individual clearance response and whether your goal is complete removal or simply sufficient fading for new permanent makeup.

I assess the response as treatment progresses rather than promising an arbitrary number of sessions before seeing how your pigment behaves.
