IPL Hair Removal Norwich

Long-term reduction of unwanted dark hair without waxing, plucking or constant shaving

Shaving every few days, waxing, ingrown hairs and constantly dealing with regrowth can become tedious very quickly. IPL hair removal works very differently.

Instead of simply removing the hair that you can see above the skin, controlled pulses of light are absorbed by the pigment within suitable hairs and converted into heat. That heat travels into the hair follicle and damages its ability to produce another strong hair.

Over a course of treatments, hair growth becomes progressively reduced, with remaining hairs often becoming finer, slower-growing and less noticeable.

At Alison Mary Aesthetics in Taverham, Norwich, I use my DPL system for IPL hair reduction. DPL belongs to the IPL family but gives me a choice of more selectively filtered wavelength ranges rather than one generic hair-removal setting.

The important bit, however, is not simply owning a hair-removal machine.

Hair colour, thickness, skin tone, treatment area, hormones and the stage of the hair-growth cycle all affect how well light-based hair removal is likely to work.

And some hair should not be treated at all.

I would much rather tell you that before we start than sell you a course that is unlikely to give you a worthwhile result.

6 Treatments Without Paying for a Course Upfront

Hair removal usually needs several treatments because only a proportion of your hairs are in the right stage of growth at any one appointment.

Most clinics therefore sell courses of around 6 treatments, often requiring the course to be purchased upfront - I do things differently.

Pay for each treatment individually as you go. Complete 5 paid treatments of the same area and your 6th treatment is free.

You receive the same saving as a traditional 6-for-5 course, but without paying hundreds or thousands of pounds upfront before you know how well your hair will respond.

5 treatments paid individually + your 6th treatment FREE - the discount is sitting in the free 6th treatment which you will be likely to need anyway.

If further treatment is needed after that, we simply continue according to your remaining hair growth rather than treating for the sake of completing a package.

Applies to the same treatment area or Full Body Package and remains subject to continued treatment suitability

Will IPL Work on My Hair?

Melanin within brown pigmentation and haemoglobin within superficial blood vessels absorb particular wavelengths of light.

When suitable wavelengths are delivered into the skin, that light energy is converted into heat within the target.

This is why IPL can improve some of the brown and red colour changes that accumulate with sun exposure and ageing.

Why Do I Need Several Treatments?

Not all of the effect is purely about colour.

Light and heat delivered into the skin can also create a controlled thermal response within the dermis.

Some studies have demonstrated changes in collagen and other dermal structures after IPL treatment, while other studies have found much more modest effects.

That is why I do not advertise IPL as a dramatic collagen-tightening treatment.

I think the more sensible way to describe it is this:

IPL is very good at improving several superficial signs of photoageing at the same time, and some clients also see gradual improvement in smoothness and overall skin quality.

If your primary goal is strong collagen remodelling, significant tightening or resurfacing, there are better technologies for that.

What Makes Someone a Good Candidate?

IPL hair reduction tends to work particularly well when there is a clear contrast between pigmented hair and the surrounding skin

Before treatment I look at:

  • Hair colour

  • Hair thickness

  • Hair density

  • Skin tone

  • Treatment area

  • Recent sun exposure or tanning

  • Medication and anything that may increase light sensitivity

  • Hormonal factors where relevant

I would rather tell somebody their hair is unlikely to respond well than sell them six treatments because they asked for them

A Note About Facial Hair

I am more selective when treating facial hair

Dark, genuinely coarse hairs on areas such as the upper lip or chin can be suitable for IPL

Very fine facial hair or soft peach fuzz is different

Fine hair is a poorer target for light-based treatment and, particularly around the face and neck, unsuitable treatment can occasionally stimulate hair growth rather than reduce it

So a small facial area being on my price list does not automatically mean every facial hair should be treated

I will assess it first

If you only have a handful of individual hairs or the hair is too fine for IPL to be sensible, another method such as electrolysis may be more appropriate

What Happens at Your IPL Hair Removal Appointment?

1. We Check the Area and Your Hair

When you arrive, I will confirm the area being treated, check the hair and skin and make sure nothing has changed since booking that could affect treatment

The area should normally have been shaved beforehand so the hair remains beneath the skin for the light to target

2. You Get Ready in Private

You only need to uncover the area being treated

For legs or underarms this is very straightforward. For bikini treatment, clothing or underwear is simply adjusted enough for me to access the treatment area, while the rest of you stays covered

There is no need to feel awkward about it. I treat the area professionally and only expose what I actually need to treat

3. The Skin Is Prepared

The area is checked and cleaned if necessary, then a layer of clear cooling gel is applied

Protective eyewear is worn throughout the treatment

4. The Area Is Treated

The handpiece is placed against the skin and controlled pulses of light are delivered systematically across the treatment area

You may feel warmth, a brief hot flick or mild stinging, particularly where the hair is darker or more densely packed

5. The Gel Is Removed and the Skin Is Checked

Once the area has been treated, the gel is removed and I check the skin before you get dressed

You may notice some temporary warmth, redness or slight swelling around individual hair follicles, which is a normal short-term response for some people

6. We Plan Your Next Session

Before you leave, I will tell you when I want to see you again based on the area being treated and how the hair is expected to regrow

You then simply shave as needed between appointments and avoid waxing, plucking, threading or epilating

That answers the actual unknown without making bikini treatment sound like a gynaecology appointment

Why Choose Alison Mary for IPL Hair Removal?

Hair removal is a very price-led treatment, so I have deliberately kept my pricing competitive, but I also do not think choosing the cheapest machine and flashing every hair somebody asks you to treat is particularly good treatment.

I personally carry out your appointments and keep track of the settings used and how your skin and hair respond, so I can make sensible adjustments as your course progresses.

I will also tell you when I think treatment is unlikely to work.

That is particularly important with facial hair, very fine hair and hair with very little pigment, where continuing to sell sessions may achieve very little.

My aim is fairly simple

Competitive pricing, sensible treatment, no unnecessary upfront course payment and honest advice about what IPL can realistically achieve

Before Your IPL Hair Removal Treatment

Shave the treatment area before your appointment.

Do not wax, thread, pluck or epilate between treatments because these methods remove the hair from the follicle and therefore remove the target needed for treatment.

Shaving is absolutely fine between sessions.

Avoid tanning and significant sun exposure before treatment.

Tell me about medication, skincare or recent treatments that may make the skin more sensitive to light.

Do not apply fake tan to the treatment area before your appointment.

After Your Treatment

The area may feel warm or look mildly pink for a short time afterwards

Some people notice temporary redness or slight swelling around individual follicles, particularly where the hair is coarse

Treat the skin gently until this settles and avoid unnecessary heat or irritation immediately after treatment

Continue shaving rather than waxing or plucking between appointments

Treated hairs do not necessarily disappear immediately. Over the following days they may appear to grow before gradually shedding from the follicle

IPL / DPL Hair Removal FAQs

Is IPL hair removal permanent?

I prefer the term long-term hair reduction.

Successfully treated follicles can produce significantly less hair, but hormones and other biological changes can stimulate new hair growth in the future.

Some people therefore choose occasional maintenance treatments.

This is true for ALL IPL and laser hair removal systems - it is just abiological fact.

How many treatments will I need?

Most people should expect a genuine course of treatment rather than one or two appointments.

Around six treatments is a useful point at which to assess overall progress, although some areas and individuals require more.

Does dark hair respond best?

Generally, yes.

IPL relies on pigment within the hair, so dark, coarse hair usually provides the strongest target.

Will it work on blonde, grey or white hair?

Very pale blonde, grey and white hair usually contains too little pigment for reliable IPL treatment.

Can I shave between treatments?

Yes.

In fact, shaving is the method I want you to use between appointments.

Can I wax or pluck?

No.

Waxing, plucking, threading and epilating remove the hair from the follicle, which removes the target needed for treatment.

Can I have my upper lip or chin treated?

Potentially, yes, if the hair is suitably dark and coarse.

Fine facial hair is assessed more cautiously and I will not treat it simply because you have booked the area.

What if my facial hair is hormonal?

Suitable coarse dark hairs can still respond, but IPL cannot remove the underlying hormonal stimulus.

This means new hairs can develop in future even if existing hairs respond well.

Does it hurt?

Most people describe a brief hot flick or sting.

Areas with dense coarse hair can feel stronger than areas with sparse finer growth.

Can I have treatment if I am tanned?

No.

A recent tan increases the amount of melanin in the skin and therefore increases the risk of the skin absorbing too much light.

How long do I leave between sessions?

It depends on the treatment area and your regrowth.

Different parts of the body have different hair-growth cycles, so appointments are spaced according to the area being treated rather than everybody returning on exactly the same schedule.
