Carbon laser facials combine a topical carbon preparation with Q-switched 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser energy to improve congestion, oiliness, enlarged-looking pores, dullness and uneven skin texture.
At Alison Mary Aesthetics in Taverham, Norwich, I use my own Diamond-Finish two-stage protocol, combining a thermal laser pass with a carbon-assisted Q-switched pass rather than treating it as a basic one-pass salon facial.

What Is a Carbon Laser Facial?
A carbon laser facial, also known as a carbon laser peel or Hollywood Peel, combines a topical carbon preparation with laser energy.
The carbon is applied across the skin and allowed to settle before being targeted with the laser.
During the Q-switched pass, the carbon absorbs the laser energy and is rapidly heated and fragmented, creating the characteristic snapping effect while removing carbon and surface debris from the skin.
Carbon-assisted Q-switched Nd:YAG treatment has been studied for enlarged pores, excess sebum, skin texture and acne. Clinical studies have reported improvements in pore appearance and acne lesions following treatment.

My Diamond-Finish Two-Stage Carbon Laser Protocol
Not every carbon laser facial is delivered using exactly the same protocol.
My treatment uses two separate laser stages.
Phase 1: Thermal Laser Pass
The first pass uses 1064 nm Nd:YAG energy without carbon. The aim is to gently heat the skin before the carbon-assisted stage and begin the laser component of the treatment.
Phase 2: Carbon-Assisted Q-Switched Pass
Carbon is then targeted with short Q-switched laser pulses. This creates the characteristic rapid carbon fragmentation across the skin and focuses the treatment on congestion, oiliness, pores and surface refinement.
Why I Treat It This Way
I treat a carbon facial as a laser procedure, not simply a facial with a laser added to it.
Laser wavelength, pulse characteristics, energy, spot size, technique and treatment passes all influence what the device actually does to tissue.
That is why my interest in laser goes well beyond learning how to operate a machine. I have spent the last two years continuously studying laser physics, tissue interaction, treatment technique and skin response, and that learning is ongoing.

What Results Can I Expect?
After treatment, the skin commonly looks cleaner, brighter and smoother, with reduced surface oil and congestion.
The appearance of enlarged pores can also improve, particularly when treatment is performed as a course.
Published research on carbon-assisted 1064 nm Nd:YAG treatment has reported improvements in pores, sebum production, inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions and overall skin texture, although results vary and studies are relatively small.
A single session is useful when you want a quick skin refresh.
If your main concern is persistent oiliness, congestion or pore appearance, several treatments may be more useful than one.

Does a carbon laser facial hurt?
Most clients find the treatment very comfortable.
You will hear and feel the characteristic snapping as the laser targets the carbon, with some warmth or mild tingling.
No numbing cream is normally required.
Is there any downtime?
Downtime is minimal for most clients.
The skin may look slightly pink or feel warm immediately afterwards, but this usually settles quickly.
How many carbon laser facials do I need?
One treatment can give the skin a useful refresh.
For ongoing concerns such as oiliness, congestion or enlarged-looking pores, a short course may be more appropriate.
I offer a course of three for £199.
Can carbon laser facials help acne?
Carbon-assisted Q-switched Nd:YAG treatment has been studied for acne and sebum reduction, with published studies reporting reductions in inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions.
It is not automatically the right treatment for every type or severity of acne, so suitability still matters.
Can I have a carbon facial if I have Botox or dermal filler?
Usually yes as part of the same overall treatment plan, but timing matters.
If you have recently had injectable treatment, tell me when it was performed so the appointments can be spaced appropriately.
Is a carbon laser facial the same as CO2 laser?
No.
They are completely different laser treatments.
A carbon facial uses Nd:YAG laser energy with topical carbon and is designed as a low-downtime skin treatment.
Fractional CO2 is an ablative resurfacing treatment capable of producing a much more substantial tissue injury and recovery phase.
